> Gait analysis can be used to diagnose injury and disease
> Take-home solution using inexpensive, lightweight sensors and artificial intelligence
> Can potentially reduce falls and healthcare costs in vulnerable populations, a major source of medical expense nationwide in the United States
OVERVIEW
Georgetown researchers have developed a system to diagnose and monitor disease progression through human gait analysis. The system uses inexpensive wearable sensors and advanced algorithms to aid people with Parkinson's disease or related disorders.
BACKGROUND
The simple act of walking requires intimate coordination between the human nervous system and the bones, muscles, and connective tissues that keep us upright, balanced, and moving forward. A wide range of disease states and injuries can result in measurable changes in gait or walking motions. The close relationship between gait and disease has made gait analysis an accessible and increasingly accurate diagnostic tool for disease progression and monitoring.
