A research group at the University of Burgos has developed a procedure for the manufacture of a prefabricated gypsum using polyurethane foam waste (of industrial origin). The cost of the sustainable prefabricated product is lower than the traditional one and it also presents improvements in terms of weight reduction, increased insulating capacity and represents a viable solution for the recycling of polyurethane foam. In this way, it contributes to the circular economy, positioning itself as an alternative to traditional prefabricated gypsum.
New and innovative aspects
One of the greatest environmental challenges of the 21st century is the reduction, reuse and recycling of plastics. In view of this situation,, the need to seek alternatives for the recovery and recycling of the plastic waste generated is evident. The procedure described by researchers at the University of Burgos has enabled the development of a sustainable prefabricated gypsum using polyurethane foam waste, which means economic and energy savings, with the consequent benefit in terms of reducing the carbon footprint.

- Cost reduction. The final cost of the material obtained is 12% lower than that of a traditional gypsum prefabricated product.

- Weight reduction of up to 25% compared to standard boards.

Specifications
- The origin of polyurethane foam waste is varied: refrigeration industry, construction industry and automotive industry. The characterisation (physical, chemical and microscopic) of this waste has been carried out in order to establish a standard manufacturing process.
- It contains reinforcement fibres, which improve the mechanical properties of the prefabricated product.
- It contains additives of various kinds, which improve the performance of the product.
