Summary of the technology

In compliance with the UNE standards, the results of this kind of tests have to be corrected by means of energy efficiency. In order to calculate these corrections, a device was design by means of monitoring a steel bar and by a signal acquisition and conditioner equipment. In Spain, up to now, this is the only equipment available.

New and innovative aspects

If the results from the dynamic probing are not corrected by means of an energy efficiency factor, these results are greater than the real ones, so we will be unnecessarily deep in the safety side. This way, the engineering elements will be over designed with greater dimensions than necessary, so the cost will be unnecessarily greater than if we apply this energy efficiency factors.

Sometimes, due to this greater energy efficiency of the modern dynamic probing equipments, the safety factors are reduced. Most of the times this reduction is made without any real measure of energy efficiency, but making a guess. This implies that if the reduction of the safety factor is not enough, we will have an increasing cost. Otherwise, we could use safety factors more little than necessary that could lead the structure to failure. This way, it is demonstrated the need of measuring the energy efficiency.

Main advantages of its use

The main advantage is the economical save. Some engineering elements are design by the results from these dynamic probing tests. If we do not apply the energy efficiency corrections, the safety factors will be greater than necessary, so there will be an overrun.

Specifications

Bar instrumented to measure real energy in dynamic penetration tests of continuous recording, used in in-situ geotechnical characterization, identification, determination of strength and / or soil deformability. This bar enables sensors measuring equipment attached to it, making access static and dynamic data, which then can calculate the actual energy that traverses the bar stem of a continuous recording dynamic penetration equipment during a penetration test on ground.

This device could be used by any company who has dynamic probing equipments.
