Summary of the technology

Researchers from the University of Burgos have developed a wastewater treatment facility based on membrane bioreactors. This installation makes it possible to maintain high concentrations of active biomass in the reaction stages and a low concentration of suspended solids in the filtration tank, reducing the fouling of the filter membranes of the installation and thereby improving the performance and effectiveness of said installation.

Details of the Technology Offer

New and innovative aspects

This installation for the treatment of wastewater is based on membrane bioreactors and consists of four stages of which three are biological treatment (one suspended culture bioreactor and two attached culture bioreactors), and a filtration stage.

The "sludge blanket” bioreactor is a tank where the microorganisms that biodegrade the organic material present in the wastewater form a suspended culture of biomass composed of granules and flocs. The "attached culture” bioreactors are those where the water to be treated comes into contact with adhered films of microorganisms, in this case to the surfaces of the disordered materials present in the said tanks.

Main advantages of its use

  • Maintains high concentrations of active biomass.
  • The concentration of suspended solids is low in the filtration stage.
  • The fouling of the filter membranes of the installation is reduced.
  • The volume of carrier material is limited.
  • The performance and effectiveness of the installation is improved.

Specifications

The installation for the treatment of wastewater characterized by being made up of four stages, three of biological treatment (1, 2, 3) and one of filtration. The first stage of biological treatment (1) houses in its interior an inert filling material where the microorganisms responsible for the biological treatment of wastewater form biofilms. The second stage of biological treatment (2) includes a suspended culture of the sludge blanket type where the microorganisms responsible for the biological treatment of the wastewater from stage (1) are housed, and allows maintaining a high concentration of active biomass with a minimum construction cost. The third stage of biological treatment (3) has in its interior filling material suitable for retaining biomass leaking from sludge blanket (2). This stage has a protective function of the membranes of the filtration tank and allows to agregated the flocs of microorganisms carried by the upward flow of water and degassing defects of the main bioreactor. The filtration stage (4) houses submerged ultrafiltration membrane modules. This filtration tank also has a gas sparging system.

Applications

Potential applications of the installation are as follow:

  • Industrial wastewater treatment
  • Urban wastewater treatment
